2010 Performance Evaluations – Florida State League Hitters

The ability to trade Tyler Pastornicky to the Braves was just one indication of the improvement in the Jays’ system in 2010.

Today we move over to the Florida State League, examining the hitters, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next three weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. There are a lot of bigger names on this list, but Dunedin’s Tyler Pastornicky was the surprising Performance leader in the 2010 FSL, as he edged out the Mets’ Wilmer Flores and two Cub farm hands—Josh Vitters and Brett Jackson.

A couple of things to remember about our Performance evaluations: 1) these are not necessarily prospect lists. While it is fair to assume that the best prospects will put up the best performances, these lists focus only on a player’s offensive performance while they were in the league during the 2010 season. They do not consider things like defensive ability, offense vs. required offense for a given position, or projectability. Prospect evaluation is a combination of art and science and this is the science part of that equation. Later in the fall, we will breakdown each team’s ‘prospects’ and rank them in ‘prospect value’ order. 2) What it is, is a comparative statistical look at each players performance, placed in context of their age, their home park, and the league. We rate each player in the five categories that we have found most significant in predicting future Major League performance. The players that rate the highest, have assembled the best ‘Performance’ in these areas. For a more detailed look at the statistics involved you can refer to previous articles on the site (http://baseballnumbers-diamondfutures.blogspot.com/2009/09/do-it-yourself-quantitative-examination.html).

A quick note about the rankings…The TOTAL is the weighted numerical value of the combined statistics that we use. It is scaled for the level of play. Typically, a player with a positive score will rank in the top 1% - 2% of all Minor League players. After the total we list the sub-scores in 4 areas of significance. These scores are presented, for ease of understanding, in a typical 20-80 scouting format. They represent how the individual player performed in those areas in relation to THE LEAGUE in question. A score of 50 represents league average. Players listed as ‘DNQ’ did not qualify for the rankings because of their limited playing time, but we felt their scores were worth noting. If you have further questions on the methodology, feel free to email me at baseballnumbers@ix.netcom.com.

2010 Performance Evaluations – California League Pitchers

The Rangers’ Joe Wieland edged teammate Wilmer Font

Today we are finishing up the California League, with a look at the pitchers, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next three weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. It was a relatively thin year for pitching this years, as more and more teams continue to skip their best pitching prospect over the League and its hitting friendly environment. Nonetheless, the Rangers’ received solid performances by their duo of Wilmer Font and Joe Wieland. The Padres limited Juan Oramas’ innings, but he still managed enough to take home the third position on the list.

A couple of things to remember about our Performance evaluations: 1) these are not necessarily prospect lists. 2010 Performance Evaluations – California League Hitters

Mike Trout nailed down his second League Performance title of 2010

We are definitely in the final half, as today we visit the California League, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next three weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. CAL League fans got a chance to see the Minors’ best prospect when the Angels promoted Mike Trout to the League in the second half. Not only was he the League’s youngest player, but his Performance score barely edged out Brandon Belt to take home top honors in the League.

A couple of things to remember about our Performance evaluations: 1) these are not necessarily prospect lists. While it is fair to assume that the best prospects will put up the best performances, these lists focus only on a player’s offensive performance while they were in the league during the 2010 season. 2010 Performance Evaluations – Carolina League Pitchers

John Lamb has quietly become one of the best left-handers in the minors

Today we hit the pitching side of the Carolina League, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next three weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. Two teams dominate this list, in what was a strong year for Carolina League pitchers; as John Lamb of the Royals edged out the Braves’ duo of Teheran and Randall Delgado. Coming in at #4 was Will Smith, whom the Royals’ acquired mid-season. All told, 15 of the 22 spots on this list are pitchers from the Royals, Braves and Indians; and that doesn’t even count Mike Montgomery who didn’t throw enough innings to qualify before his promotion.

A couple of things to remember about our Performance evaluations: 1) these are not necessarily prospect lists. While it is fair to assume that the best prospects will put up the best performances, these lists focus only on a player’s offensive performance while they were in the league during the 2010 season. 2010 Performance Evaluations – Carolina League Hitters

Eric Hosmer used 2010 to reestablish himself as one of the best hitting prospects in the minors

We move over to the Carolina League, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next three weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. It was a solid year for prospect watching in the Carolina League in 2010, but one team dominated the Performance Scores as, overall, the Royal’s affiliate in Wilmington posted five of the League’s Top 10 Scores. This may come as little surprise to prospect watchers though, as the Royals may have the best system in baseball right now, and nearly all of their top prospects spent some part of the season in Wilmington. As to the position players, two Royals’ prospects topped the list, as 2008 first round pick Eric Hosmer edged out Wil Myers.

2010 Performance Evaluations – Midwest League Pitchers

Align Center
The 2009 prep pitching crop was strong at the top and Shelby Miller just might be the best of them all

We finish the Midwest League with the pitchers today, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next four weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. While keeping up with the position players in the MWL was tough this year, the pitchers, led by the Cardinals’ Shelby Miller, the Tigers’ Jacob Turner and the Angels’ Tyler Skaggs did their best to try. Not only did the MWL feature expected elite talent like those three, but it got unexpected breakout performances from the Twins’ Liam Hendriks, the Padres’ Juan Oramas, the Indians’ Giovanny Soto and the Athletics’ Ian Krol. When combined with the positional talent in the League, the 2010 MWL prospects may rival the exceptional 2007 MWL class.

2010 Performance Evaluations – Midwest League Hitters

Mike Trout may have nailed down Top Prospect honors with his MWL performance

The Midwest League is next up, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next four weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. Bar none, the best prospect talent in all of baseball passed through the MWL this summer and the position players may have been stronger than the pitchers. No less than eight players that will likely end up on most Top 100 lists appear on the list below, and the best of the best was the Angels’ Mike Trout. Trout played as an 18yo in the MWL this year, and despite giving two to three years to most of his competition, he flirted with a 1.000 OPS for most of the year before ending up at .979. But the talent doesn’t end there, as fellow 2009 draftees Wil Myers and Nick Franklin were nipping at Trout’s heels.

A couple of things to remember about our Performance evaluations: 1) these are not necessarily prospect lists. While it is fair to assume that the best prospects will put up the best performances, these lists focus only on a player’s offensive performance while they were in the league during the 2010 season. 2010 Performance Evaluations – South Atlantic League Pitchers

Rodriguez may not have Teheran’s upside, but he did edge him out in SAL Performance

Moving over to the pitchers of the South Atlantic League, we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next four weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. The position players in the SAL were a solid bunch in 2010, but may have lacked a bit in the elite talent range. A number of premium pitchers moved through the SAL this season, led by the Braves duo of Teheran and Vizcaino, but none of them had the Performance that was put on by the Phillies Julio Rodriguez, who was thoroughly dominant in 13 appearances, as he fanned 90 in 56 IP. This was the second league of the season that Rodriguez’s performance earned him the top spot.

2010 Performance Evaluations – South Atlantic League Hitters

Singleton cooled off a bit, but his red-hot start propelled him to the top spot

Today we begin our look at the full season leagues with the hitters of the South Atlantic League, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next four weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. The position players in the SAL were a solid bunch in 2010, but may have lacked a bit in the elite talent range. Even the top performer, the Phillies’ Jonathan Singleton, will likely be relegated to first base—diminishing his value. While regular readers will recognize #3 finisher , the diminutive Jose Altuve, as one of our personal favorites; he lacks much in the way of long term potential. Still there are solid prospects throughout this list that may breakout as the move up the ladder, with #2 Wilmer Flores being one of the ones too watch.

A couple of things to remember about our Performance evaluations: 1) these are not necessarily prospect lists. While it is fair to assume that the best prospects will put up the best performances, these lists focus only on a player’s offensive performance while they were in the league during the 2010 season. We rate each player in the five categories that we have found most significant in predicting future Major League performance. The players that rate the highest, have assembled the best ‘Performance’ in these areas. 2010 Performance Evaluations – New York-Penn League Pitchers

Phillies’ RHP Julio Rodriguez used a huge breaking ball to dominate NYP hitters

We finish up the short season leagues with a look at the pitchers in the NYP, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next four weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. It was a solid year for pitching talent in the NYP—albeit rather unspectacular. The Phillies’ Julio Rodriguez dominated NYP hitters, before moving up to the SAL, primarily with a dazzling curve ball. While there are questions about his eventual upside, he encountered few problems after his promotion and even showed an uptick in velocity.

2010 Performance Evaluations – New York-Penn League Hitters

Marlins’ RF Marcell Ozuna had a breakout season in the NYP

Today we move over to the New York-Penn League with a look at the hitters, as we continue our annual examination of Performance for each of eighteen Minor Leagues that have affiliations with MLB organizations. Over the next four weeks we will post the Performance analysis for approximately three leagues each week until we have run through them all. While there are a ton of interesting position prospects in the NYP this year, few of them turned in eye-popping performances. One of the exceptions, however, was League HR leader, Marlins’ RF Marcell Ozuna.

While it is fair to assume that the best prospects will put up the best performances, these lists focus only on a player’s offensive performance while they were in the league during the 2010 season.
