Around the Bases - July 1, 2009

Gallardo has quickly become the Brewers ace

Maybe a trade is in order…
After last night’s 3 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks, Pirates’ secondbase prospect, Jim Negrych, may want to push for a trade to the Phillies. In 8 games at Reading’s First Energy Stadium, Negrych has posted a .500/.615/.750, elsewhere in the Eastern League he is .248/.332/.311.

Good night to be 23yo and a MLB pitcher…
The Nationals’ Jordan Zimmerman (6IP, 2ER, 6H, 1BB, 6K), the Orioles’ Brad Bergensen (8IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 6K) and the Brewers’ Yovanni Gallardo (7IP, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 12K), all spent yesterday celebrating their youth.

Of course 19yo and in AA isn’t bad either…
At least if you are the Marlins’ Mike Stanton, who went 2 for 5, with 2 homeruns, as the Southern League’s youngest position player.

And even younger…
The Yankees’ Jesus Montero has 20 days more youth than Stanton, as the Eastern League’s youngest position player. He went 2 for 3 with a double, a home run, and a walk, and is now posting a .937 OPS through 20 games.

Ugly line of the day…
…belongs to the Rangers’ Greg Golson, who went 0 for 6, while fanning four times.
